Project Overview

I am filling out our 2021 990-EZ form for the first time. I need an accountant who is familiar with nonprofit tax filing. It is due November 15, 2022. Partners In Health has been our fiscal sponsor and fiscal agent for the past 10 years so we have not had to file independently. We want to make sure we do the 990 correctly. Our goal is to make sure Ready for Reading implements all operational processes professionally and in compliance.

Ready for Reading has a 10 year track record of successfully implementing literacy and education programs for all ages in Rwinkwavu in rural Rwanda. Our vision was to provide these opportunities in our catchment area of 330,00 people so we built and have operated the 8,000 sq ft Rwinkwavu Community Library/Learning Center which opened in 2012 and quickly became a replicable national model. Our low-cost/high-impact model, is well suited to scaling through partnerships and has been replicated utilizing existing libraries, organizations, community structures and staff country-wide. Ready for Reading is not only impacting a portion of Rwanda but solving the problem of education/literacy equity changing the approach at the systems level. In 2019 we were chosen to be a Best Practices Honoree by the Library of Congress for our work promoting literacy.

At this point, we’re looking to grow and diversify our funding base. Our challenge is to break through the firewalls of foundations, corporations, and individual donors who would want to work with/support an NGO whose proven solution is bigger than its current budget. In order to do this, we need to make sure our operational, and financial systems are set up correctly. Foundations, corporations, and large donors want to see all financials and 990s on our website and on platforms such as Guide Star and Charity Navigator increasing Ready for Reading's visibility. Many foundations, DAF use these platforms to research organizations to fund in their area of interest. All the information needed to file has been compiled and I have the forms. The IRS has now mandated that Nonprofits have to file online and use an IRS-authorized and SOC 2 certified e-file provider. We have an account with Express Tax Exempt and have attended a webinar on how to file. But we need accounting help with the form to ensure we fill out the form with the correct information. The nice thing about Tax exempt is that they will review the form and let you know what info you may not have provided, like schedules etc.

Nonprofit Overview

Ready for Reading provides literacy, life skills, and educational resources to children and adults in rural Rwanda. We foster a culture of reading and the idea that literacy is a powerful key to lifelong learning, unlocking the potential of preschoolers to grandparents and inspiring them to dream big and hope for a future they never thought possible. In a part of the world where learning to read and write is not an expectation or even a possibility, Literacy Changes Everything
