Project Overview

Social Purpose Works is recruiting an experienced strategic planning professional for DisOrient Asian American Film Festival of Oregon.

Social Purpose Works is the latest innovative program offering of Metropolitan Family Service (MFS), a Portland Oregon social service agency since 1950. MFS Social Purpose Works recruits pro bono (volunteer) professionals for nonprofit project-based opportunities in Oregon and SW Washington.

As the premier Asian American Film Festival of Oregon, DisOrient has been celebrating independent films for 17 years, showcasing authentic Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) voices, histories and stories. DisOrient was conceived by filmmaker and Eugene native Jason Mak, who saw the need for a broader representation of Asian American voices and histories in the Eugene community. Just before the pandemic, DisOrient established itself as a non-profit 501(c)(3).

DisOrient promotes representation, diversity, and inclusion to broaden the narrative of who is American and to strengthen and build community. They highlight social justice themes that translate to universal human experiences. They believe in the power of film and storytelling to bring people together and to create positive change.

Project Description:

DisOrient has been run by an ever-changing, small but committed group of volunteers. They just completed their 17th annual film festival, with both in-person and online screenings. It has grown as a festival – both in scope and duration. They had a record number of 80 films in their program this year. While a good problem to have, they are experiencing severe growing pains and have been operating reactively to new opportunities, overstretching their capacity year after year.

DisOrient is ready to develop their first strategic plan to:
- Create an organizational framework to plan each festival, grounded in their vision and mission
- Build and manage an effective and reliable staff and returning volunteers, and plan each festival within the parameters of HR sustainability
- Create a solid leadership foundation for the organization’s future

Your professional experience and knowledge of strategic planning would help this locally-grown, unique and important social justice event to thrive.

Key Deliverables:
- Review/update DisOrient’s mission statement, board policies and by-laws
- Assess current processes and structures including financial accounting, HR management and board recruitment
- Hone organizational priorities and values that will serve as filters for our work, guide decision making, and prevent getting sidetracked
- Develop a checklist for annual self-evaluation
- Prepare a 3-5 year actionable strategic plan document with mechanisms to monitor progress
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
- Strategic Plan Development
- Business Development
- Facilitation skills in working a group toward consensus
- Ability to assess and synthesize the needs of an organization
- Cultural Awareness/Humility
- Leadership and Board Development

Proven experience effectively guiding an organization through the strategic planning process.

Time Commitment:
Medium project, estimated at 80-120 hours. Flexible hours around your schedule, to be completed 6 months from the start date.

The Programming Director will be the Project Champion. The candidate will need access to their own computer, internet, etc. Potential small stipend contingent upon grant funding.

Work Environment/Location:
Remote. Must provide own workspace; DisOrient does not have an office space.
